मानों and  जैसे with the subjunctive. And  सा
    In Hindi  मानों or  जैसे with the subjunctive renders English as if  ( मानों is slightly more formal than  जैसे ):
   1.  मुझे ऐसा लगता था जैसे मुझे प्रेम हो गया हो।
       'It seemed to me as if I were in love.'
   2.  बहू इस तरह हमारी शिकायत करती है मानों हम उसपर बड़ा ज़ुल्म करते हों।
       'Daughter-in-law complains about us as if we were being terribly cruel to her.'
         Clauses beginning with  जैसे or  मानों are often keyed to their main clause with  ऐसा,  ऐसे or  इस तरह :
   3.  वह मेरी तरफ़ ऐसे देख रहा था जैसे मैं उसका दुश्मन होऊं।
       'He was looking at me as if I were his enemy.'
         Clauses in  मानों or  जैसे commonly occur in expressions of pretense:
   4.  मत दिखाओ जैसे तुम्हें परीक्षा की रिज़ल्ट पर ताज्जुब हो।
       'Don't pretend to be surprised at the examination results.'
   5.  वह बन रही है मानों उसे उस पुरुष से कोई मतलब न हो।
       'She's acting as if she had nothing to do with that man.'
         When such clauses refer to the past, the indicative is used:
   6.  मानों आज शुक्रवार हो !    मानों उस दिन तुम्हारी वर्षगाँठ थी !
       'As if today is Friday! As if that day were your birthday!'
    Like many relative clauses in  जैसे, "as if" clauses in  जैसे can be reduced to postpositional phrases :
   7a.  आप तो ऐसे रहते हैं जैसे कोई छोटे राजा हों।
   7b.  आप तो किसी छोटे राजा जैसे रहते हैं।
       'You live like (as if you were ) a little king.'
         Postpositional  जैसे can be further reduced to adjectival ( जै-)सा :
   8a.  मेरा छोटे से छोटा काम तुम्हें ऐसा लगता है जैसे पहाड़ हो।
   8b.  मेरा छोटे से छोटा काम तुम्हें पहाड़ ( जै) - सा लगता है।
       'The least little thing I ask you to do seems like a mountain to you.'
   मानों and  जैसे can be used as independent hedges on a statement. As such they govern the indicative rather than the sunjunctive :
   9.  आजकल दुनिया जैसे छोटी हो रही है।
       'Nowadays the world is as if shrinking.'
   10. तुम मानों हिन्दुस्तानी मसालों के आदी हो गये हो।
       'You've become as it were addicted to Indian spices.'
        सा is used in a similar way with nouns, adjectives, adverbs, even verbs :
   11. मरीज़ के माथे पर दर्द की लकीरें सी दिखाई दीं।
       'Something like lines of pain appeared on the patient's brow.'
   12. धीमी सी आवाज़ में वह माफऱ्ीन माँगने लगा।
       'In a somewhat faint voice he began to ask for morphine.'
  13. एक जवान सी औररत उठ खड़ी हुई औरर उसने मेरी बात पर ज़बरदस्त एतराज़ किया।
       A youngish woman got up and objected violently to what I'd said.'
   14. अपनी बात ख़त्म करके मेरी तरफ़ देखा औरर मुसकरा सी दी।
       'When she was finished she looked my way and, it seemed, smiled.'
         Notice that when  सा is being used as a hedge it does not require the oblique form of noun which precedes. Compare :
  15. पानी में शीशे सी चमक थी।          (postpositional  सा )
       'The water had the gleam of a mirror.'
   16. पानी में शीशा सा चमक रहा था।       ( सा as hedge)
       'In the water was shining something like a mirror.'
       With certain adjectives of degree  सा intensifies rather than attenuates the meaning:
  17. तुम्हें इतनी सी बातों पर दोस्तों से यूँ ही चिढ़ हो जाती है।
       'You get annoyed with your friends over the least little things for no reason at all.'
  18. हिन्दुस्तान में आम लोग अपने कुत्तों का ज़रा सा भी ख़्याल नहीं रखते।
       'In India ordinary people don't take care of their dogs at all.'
  19. मुझसे थोड़ी सी भी मिर्च बरदाश्त नहीं होती।
       'I cannot stand even a little bit of (chili) pepper.'
         The particle  सा may also be used adverbially:
  20. फोड़ों को पके आम- सा दाब देता था,  खाल को आलू- सा छील देता था . . .
       '(The doctor) would squeeze boils as if they were ripe mangos and peel off skin as if it were a potato's...'
