Attaching verb to verb with V-ने का and V-ने की.

One of the ways one verb can be attached to another in Hindi-Urdu is with the postposition  का  (or  की ):
1.  उन्होंने हमेशा जनता के साथ मिले रहने की कोशिश की थी।
'He had always tried to remain a man of the people.'
(from Chapter Twenty-eight of  गोदान.  See
context.)
2.  चौबीस घण्टे के अन्दर मुल्क से निकल जाने का हुक्म हुआ।
'He was ordered to leave the country within twenty-four hours.'
(from Chapter Six of  गोदान.  See
context.)
This way of linking verb to verb is governed by verbal expressions that contain nouns.  The choice between  का or  की  is determined by the gender of the contained (or incorporated) noun.  In (3) the noun  इन्तज़ार is masculine, hence  बरसने का.  In (4) the noun  प्रतीक्षा is feminine, hence  निकलने की:
3.  किसान पानी बरसने का इन्तज़ार कर रहे हें।
'The farmers are waiting for it to rain.'
4.  टूरिस्ट धूप निकलने की प्रतीक्षा कर रहे हैं।
'The tourists are waiting for the sun to come out.'
The verb  सोच  is exceptional:  In the meaning of 'to think of (doing something)' or 'to plan on (doing something)'  सोच governs  की  even though no noun is contained:
5.  कभी लड़कों के साथ रहने की सोचते हैं  कभी लखनऊ जाकर रहने की सोचते हैं।
'Sometimes he thinks of staying with the children; sometimes, of going to live in Lucknow.'
(from Chapter Twenty-six of  गोदान.  See
context.)
Some of the expressions governing V- ने का  or V- ने की  also govern  को  or  का  of experiencing agent:
6.  तुम्हें दवा पिलाने का मरज़ है।
'You are addicted to dispensing medicines.'
(from Chapter Eighteen of  गोदान.  See
context.)
7.  मुझे देवी बनने की इच्छा नहीं है।
'I have no wish to become a goddess.'
(from Chapter Seven of  गोदान.  See
context.)
8.  झुनिया का मन भी अभी कुछ दिन यहाँ रहने का था।
'Jhuniyâ too felt like staying here for a few days now.'
(from Chapter Thirty-six of  गोदान.  See
context.)
While most instances of V-ने का  depend on a noun there are a few that depend on an adjective:
9.  लड़का दिन-भर आँगन में या द्वार पर खेलने का आदी था।
'The boy was accustomed to playing all day in the courtyard or by the door.'
(from Chapter Twenty-seven of  गोदान.  See
context.)
